Access control systems, explained

Access control does exactly what the name says: it gives you control over who has access to what, and when. Take a large multi-story building with a lot of staff, not all of whom should reach every area and floor. With an access control system you create groups in your employee database and assign each group only the doors it needs, and not just which doors, but which times on which days. You can also schedule a door to unlock automatically, such as a public entrance during business hours.

Credentials are checked seamlessly as the request is made, via a prox card or fob presented to a reader. If the person is allowed through, the door unlocks. If not, it does not. A door held open when it should not be is monitored too, and all of it is recorded and stored for you to use as needed.

Tied into life safety

The whole system can be tied into the fire system, so that in the event of a fire alarm every door unlocks for easy egress.

Custom applications

Not every requirement comes out of a catalogue. We built custom production-room access for Dow Development Labs, and we regularly work through problems that need a bespoke answer.

This is only the beginning of what access control can do. Installed properly, the combination of controlled access and the data the system generates makes it a genuinely powerful management tool.
